Slant, 2020
Thread, wood, steel, acrylic paint
Commissioned by Skylyne at Temescal, Oakland, CA
Slant represents the power of one line—a statement of individual contribution within a collective. Over three miles of sewing thread meticulously passed between the hands of both artists to anchor this artwork. Viewers are encouraged to interact with the piece through movement, creating a change in perspective. The interplay of light and space reveals an etheric softness of hard lines, reflecting the spectrum of expression.
Shine Black, 2020
Coroplast, phosphorescent acrylic paint, metal
Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA
Shine Black was erected as a poignant response to the social unrest following the public murder of George Floyd. Emerging from an expression of collective rage and despair, this installation served as a reminder that we are more than the conditions and unjust treatment to which we are subjected. Even in unimaginable grief lies the freedom to choose not to respond in kind. The phosphorescent paint highlighted ancestral resilience and the ability to shine through the darkness of shared experience.
